Island Profile
St. Kitts was the first British Colony in the Caribbean and was founded in 1623. It was also the site of the first French settlement established in the 1630s. St. Kitts-Nevis joined the West Indies Associated States in 1967 and it wasn’t until 1983 that the islands became a fully independent state.St. Kitts and Nevis cover a surface of 270 square kilometers with a combined population of 45,000 inhabitants. They have a great diversity of terrain including volcanic forest-covered mountains and beautiful palm-fringed beaches. The island boasts a very Caribbean atmosphere with old sugar estates and plantations, pastel-painted colonial buildings and friendly, hospitable people.
Shopping
Shopping items to buy while in St. Kitts include imported British goods, perfumes, watches and imported china. There is also a good selection of copperware, stamps, local beer and rum, local handicrafts, such as embroidery and local fabrics such as Batiks. On St. Kitts, most shops are concentrated in Basseterre on Fort Street, Bay Road and in the Independence Square area.
