COZUMEL CORAL REEFS
Cozumel is a stunning place
whose sweeping stretches of beaches, translucent emerald water, rich
thickets of tropical jungle, and sculptural limestone and coral
formations inspired religious fervor in the ancient Maya. The island
continues to woo new visitors, who return every year captivated by the
land's almost palpable spirit. Yet, the real gem of Cozumel is
found in the waters surrounding the Island.
Palancar Reef, one of the
largest coral reefs in the world, became famous among divers after
marine explorer Jacques Cousteau "discovered" the area in
the 1950s. With underwater spires and a multitude of brilliantly
colored tropical fish, it is a spot that no experienced diver will
want to miss. Palancar has four different kinds of coral, including
the rare black coral sold in town shops. Note: It is illegal to bring
this coral into the United States.
Other
reefs are Paraiso Reef, a series of three reefs just south of La Ceiba
and one of the area's best spots for night diving; San Francisco Reef
off Playa San Francisco; and beautiful Columbia Reef, one of the
area's best places to see turtles and other marine wildlife. For
experienced divers only are the Santa Rosa Wall, a bottomless drop-off
second only to Palancar in popularity, and Maracaibo Reef.
